THE PAST OF WOOD IN THE FUTURE OF LITHUANIAN CONSTRUCTION

Construction of single-family wooden houses, one of the main typologies that make up the cities of Lithuania. This constructive heritage is being lost in recent years, being a power in the production of wood in the European market. This research work analyzes the main characteristics of this construction typology spread throughout all the cities of the country. And the impact they generate on the environment that surrounds them is studied.

In order to carry out this research and that it may have an impact on these homes, a typical single-family home is chosen that meets the main construction characteristics of this type of homes. This house will be analyzed in detail in order to have a clear idea of its constructive operation and the techniques used in its construction. This constructive analysis will allow to have a clear idea of which are the strongest points and which are the main disadvantages, in order to later make an improvement proposal that is capable of adapting to this construction typology and in this way give life to these homes again.

Another important point in this analysis of this house is to study the operation and the impact generated by the air conditioning system used in it. As it is one of the main and most widespread types of housing, they generate a very important environmental impact among them. It is a system of chimneys which work with the direct combustion of wood, this system of chimneys is used by most of these single-family homes, including part of modern homes.

Combining the previous study of the constructive operation of the house and the analysis of the air conditioning system, a new climate system is proposed that is capable of being integrated into this type of housing without having to carry out large-scale works. With the aim that most of these homes can afford this rehabilitation.

With this proposal, the possibility of extending the life of these houses is created, preventing them from being abandoned or demolished, to build an equal but more modern one. At the same time we are managing to provide a much more sustainable environment both environmentally and socially.
